The Illuminati (/əˌluːmɪˈnɑːti/; plural of Latin illuminatus, ‘enlightened’) is a name given to several groups, both real and fictitious. Historically, the name usually refers to the Bavarian Illuminati, an Enlightenment-era secret society founded on 1 May 1776 in the Electorate of Bavaria. The society’s stated goals were to oppose superstition, obscurantism, religious influence over public life, and abuses of state power.

As stated, the Illuminati were a real group. When they were discovered, the governments of several nations sought to route them out, and they went underground, forming several other organizations with different names but the same goals. Although many of the members of the original Illuminati were themselves religious leaders, such as rabbis and Catholic priests, one of their primary goals has been the destruction of Christianity. As should be expected, many of the members were also powerful people holding political office.
