Most pastors teach that Romans 13 means unconditional obedience to government. They’re missing the whole story. In Part 3, we examine what the Three Wise Men actually did when King Herod gave them a direct order — and how God responded. This single passage from Matthew 2 exposes the fatal flaw in the “always obey government” interpretation of Romans 13. We also break down Romans 13:3 in detail — the verse that defines exactly when a ruler is acting as God’s servant, and when they’re not. Because once a government becomes a terror to those who do good, the rules change entirely. If you’ve been told that resisting tyranny is the same as resisting God, this video is for you. 📖 Scriptures covered: Romans 13:1-7 · Matthew 2:7-12 🔔

All right, welcome to part three of what does Romans 13 really say? Where we start off with a clip of a religious leader telling you what most religious leaders tell us what Romans 13 means. Then we go through a scripture that completely contradicts that interpretation of Romans 13. And then we show you what Romans 13 actually says. So let's get started. Here's the pastor for this week. And we as Christian citizens submit to the governmental authority. We submit ourselves and refusal to submit constitutes resisting the authority of God. All right, so resisting the government is the same as resisting the authority of God is what they say Romans 13 means. Let's go to the book of Matthew chapter 2. And this week we're just going to stick with the pretty close, but I like the clarity of the NRSV version. And this is Matthew chapter 2. And this is the story of, of course, the three Magi, the three wise men. And in verse 7, it says, "Then Herod secretly calls for the Magi and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, 'Go and search diligently for the child. And when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.'" So the king told the three wise men to go, to go find the savior, to find the baby Jesus, and then come back and tell him so that he can go and worship him too. So they had no reason to be like, "Hey, kind of like Pharaoh, where there's like we talked about last time in part two, the midwives knew that Pharaoh was going to kill the babies." And they're like, "Not going to do it." So they lied to him and they said no. And, but here we have the king is like, "Hey, you know, I want to worship this guy too." And so the three wise men go off and they find the savior. And then we read in the last verse in, not the last verse, sorry, verse 12, it says, "And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road." So not only did the Lord not expect them, not only did God not expect them to just obey the king that told, you know, even though they were under this pretense that he was just wanting to worship him too, they received the divine message to not go back, not to obey the government and to flee town so that nobody saw them. Get out of town and do it through deception, do it through, do it in secret, right? Make it so nobody knows that you're leaving town. So again, are the three wise men ever seen as the bad guys for not obeying the government? Are the three wise men ever shown as doing the wrong thing, being punished, being cowards, doing anything but what they were told to do by God? So this vision that they received from God told them not to go back.
And why? Because it protected the Lord and His life. The Lord, God provided a way to ensure that the Savior was not killed by the king. And He did it through the means of men, inspired men not to go and tell the king where he was, disobeying the government. So were these three kings, according to this pasture, were the, not three kings, were these three wise men, these three magi, were they denying, were they rebelling against the authority of God because they rebelled against the king? I would say that's a pretty ridiculous concept or idea that that would be the case, that anybody would condemn the three wise men for doing what God told them to do in the dream. And that of course, they were not resisting the authority of God by resisting the government. So what does Romans 13 actually say? We've covered parts of it, but there's a couple of other verses that I wanted to expand on that we haven't talked about in these previous videos. Let's go to verse three. "For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you wish to have no fear of the authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive its approval. For it is God's agent for your good. But if you do what is wrong, you should be afraid, for the authority does not bear the sword in vain. It is the agent of God to execute wrath on the wrongdoer." Okay, so as we've talked about before, government is an ordinance of God. And as an agent and the administrative of government, right? The magistrate in government is the servant of God for good and is not a terror to those that do good. Therefore, when government is a terror to those that do good, such as Herod, right? Such as Pharaoh, right? Such as, you know, any tyrant throughout time, they have changed the ordinance of God, and they are no longer acting as an agent of God. They are no longer acting as a minister of God.
They are no longer under our obligation to obey them. And in fact, we are, as the examples show, to disobey them. All right, so this has been part three in "What Does Romans 13 Really Mean?" Are we supposed to obey the government no matter what? When are we supposed to obey the government? When? It is a terror to good works and a blessing to those that do good. When it is not, it is no longer a magistrate for God, but is a servant of Satan. Make sure that you go and you click on the subscribe button.
