Liberty takes work. A lot of work. Because we know that faith without works is dead, and also that works without faith is dead. You have to have the two together, because this is something that we need God's help with. I cannot, you know, just like with our gardens, I cannot just say, "Well, you know, God said that He would fight my battles for me, and so I can't do anything without Him, and so I'm just going to let Him grow my garden for me." No, He expects us to plant the seeds, and to weed the weeds, and to, you know, make sure that it's irrigated, and watered, and taken care of. And He provides the sunshine and the rain that I can't provide.
And so faith does take action. You show your faith through your actions. And so we have to understand this is not a new thing. We need to understand that these principles that we're trying to help build a foundation on, and so that we can see when we're being lied to, and when somebody is trying to get us to be inactive. And that's what you can tell is because we're supposed to be doers of the Word. And so Satan is working through his earthly servants, as well as through the Spirit, to get us to give up. And so we need to understand correct principles so that we know when false principles are being taught to us. Joseph Smith said that, "How may be asked, was this known to be a bad angel?" He says, "By his contradicting a form of revelation." So if we understand the revelations, then we'll know that things are false and not correct. And so there are theories, and we need to make sure that we're aware of false theories that contradict these previous teachings.
And so we need to ask, you know, ourselves, have we been given a key to understand prophecy? One of the best prolific missionaries of this dispensation is Parley P. Pratt. He wrote two really important missionary tracts, one called "The Science to the Key of Theology," and then this one, "The Voice of Warning," where he talks about the fact that we are in the last days, which is a fact. But how do we understand these things? He says, "But first, for the definite rule of interpretation. For this we will not depend on any man or commentary, or the Holy Ghost has given it by the mouth of Peter. Knowing this, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation."
He continues, "Now if we should find in our researches that every prophecy which has been fulfilled, it follows of necessity that every prophecy which is yet future will not fail of a literal fulfillment. Let us commence with the days of Noah. In the verses which follow the above, the Lord commands Noah to enter the ark and take with him animals of every kind. It was well for Noah that he was not very well versed, not well versed, in the spiritualizing systems of modern divinity. He would have been told that the flood meant a spiritual flood, and the ark a spiritual ark, and the moment he thought otherwise, he would have been set down for a fanatic, a knave, or a fool." So this is the key that we've been given. These aren't just spiritual things that we have to un-code and decode. But one of the things that Joseph Smith said that causes the most problems, people read like Isaiah for example, is that they try to spiritualize it, as opposed to, he said that we need to read them as they are written.
So prophecy, of course, is literal, and we're told that we have a duty. This is Doctrine and Covenants, section 123, verse 13. We are told that we are to waste and wear out our lives, exposing the hidden things of darkness. And in 2 Nephi, we're told that we are to act and not be acted upon. We are to be doers of the word. So there are some things, just like Paul told the saints back in the ancient days, some things that had to be done first. But we've also been told, what are some things that we need to be working towards? We need to be building, right? We need to occupy until he comes. And so, what are those things?
The first thing that we're going to talk about tonight is Zion has to be established beforehand. I think too many of us believe that it's something that's going to happen afterwards, that somebody's going to take care of this for us. But we're going to go through the scriptures that show that, no, that's not the facts. And that the fact is, the kingdom of God has to be in operation, political kingdom of God. And then that seer combinations are going to be destroyed amongst these communities, and that Satan will be bound, all previous because of the things that we've done as individuals and working together. So one, Zion must be established. John Taylor said, "But if Zion is never built, it's never built up, the Lord will never come, for he must have a people and a place to come to." I think this is something that we need to have, right, just repeated in our brains over and over again. He's waiting for us, we're not waiting for him. We have to build Zion, he has to have a people to come to.
So what does Zion look like? The Lord called his people Zion because they were of one heart, one mind, and they dwelt in righteousness and there was no poor among them. He said that, "And the nations of the earth shall honor her." So the nations of the earth, meaning the Gentile nations, the wicked nations of the earth will still exist when Zion is established. We're not waiting for everything to be destroyed. Those evil nations will still exist when Zion is established, they're going to recognize her. "Surely Zion is the city of our God, and surely Zion cannot fall, for God is here, is there, and the hand of the Lord is there, for this is Zion, the pure in heart."
So you can't have wickedness in Zion. So this idea of libertinism where we just allow people to, you know, do any kind of debauchery that they can think of is also not something that will be around in Zion. "But behold, they have not learned to be obedient." This is the reason why they weren't allowed to build Zion. This is why those things were taken away in the 1830s. The Lord says that, "They have not learned to be obedient to the things which I required at their hands, but are full of all manner of evil, and Zion cannot be built up unless it is by the principles of the law of the celestial kingdom. Otherwise, I cannot receive her unto myself." So we have to understand what those are and to live them. So just to recap what Zion is, it becomes unified in truth, right? We're not, this isn't unity for unity's sake. We're not just being passive aggressive and just going along to get along. We're becoming united on correct principles. We're one heart and one mind. We also, and we have to be a holy people. We have to understand the correct principles, and we have to apply and live by them. And we have to care for those that can't care for themselves to such effectiveness that there's no poor among us, right? Zion comes when we do these things. It's not like all of a sudden, right? Like a lot of people think, "Well, you know, when I die, I won't have my addictions anymore." That's not true. The same thing, right? If we're not here building these things, when the Lord comes, what use are we to Him to help Him do whatever He's going to be doing? We have to be doing these things right now to prove ourselves as faithful servants.
Doctrine and Covenants, talking about the New Jerusalem, Zion, the land of peace, a city of refuge, a place of safety for the saints of the Most High God. So this righteous city is a place of safety against what? A place of safety for the saints, and the glory of the Lord shall be there, and the terror of the Lord shall be there. In so much that the wicked will not come unto it, and it shall be called Zion.
So the wicked will still exist when Zion is established, and they're not going to want to come to it. And it shall come to pass among the wicked that every man that will not take his sword against his neighbor must flee to Zion for safety. And it shall be said among the wicked, "Let us not go up to battle against Zion, for the inhabitants of Zion are terrible, wherefore we cannot stand." So again, they're going to exist, they're going to still be here, they're not going to be burned up while we're sucked up into heaven. We're building something that is better. And they're going to say because of our power that they can't come against us, that we are terrible, and they can't stand to come against us. Are we at that point right now where if the wicked came against the righteous, would we be able to withstand?
And it came to pass, it shall come to pass, that the righteous shall be gathered out from among all nations, and they shall come to Zion singing the songs of everlasting joy. Come to a place where those other wicked nations still exist. George Q. Cannon says, "I expect to see the day when the Latter-day Saints will be the people to maintain constitutional government on this land. Men everywhere should know that we believe in constitutional principles, and that we expect that it will be our destiny to maintain them. The causes are in operation to bring it out. We are not alone in the thought that the Republic is drifting steadily in that direction." Can you imagine that? In the 1860s, they're already saying that, you know, the Republic is in a dire situation. "That we are leaving the old constitutional landmarks. Men will be compelled to flee to the Mormons, despised as they are now."
And then the Prophet Brigham Young said that, "There is no man on this earth who can receive the kingdom of God in his heart and be governed according to the laws of that kingdom without being governed and controlled in all temporal matters. If you are not of one heart and mind in these things, never think of Jackson County because you're not going to be wanted there. No man is going to inherit celestial glory who trifles with the principles thereof. The man who does not labor from day to day and from hour to hour for building up this kingdom and bringing forth the fullness of the kingdom of God on the earth and the establishment of Zion will sooner or later fall." So we can see what that mindset is of just riding through life and not having a goal in mind, of something that you're building to make things better. Not saying that, "I just got to get my food storage and go hide in a cave somewhere until everything falls apart." No, that is not our job. And if that is our mindset, what is going to happen to us? Because if we can't learn to keep the commandments of God in the great Salt Lake City, how do we expect to keep them somewhere else? Of course, the nearest way to the center stake of Zion is through the great Salt Lake City. Where is the center stake of Zion? In Jackson County, Missouri. So basically meaning under proper authority.
And then Heber C. Kimball explained, "The kingdom will be built up, the elect gathered, and the chosen ones go back to the center stake of Zion. There are a great many that are remaining in the states until we go back, but I can tell them they will have to come here, for this is the only way there is for the true saints to get to Jackson County." So basically the idea that we just get to do these things and these things are just going to happen, they're saying, "No, we've got to live a certain way. We've got to prove." We were driven because we rejected or we didn't live up to the standard. And so basically we're in the wilderness wandering until we can live up to that standard. And then we can return and build that. John Taylor said that, "We have enlisted in this kingdom for the purpose of working righteousness, growing up in righteousness and in purity, that we might have a heaven in our families, in our city and neighborhoods, a Zion right in our midst, live it in ourselves, and persuade everybody else to abide its holy laws." So there's a standard that has to be met and lived by. So Zion is going to be established before the second coming.
The second thing is the kingdom of God established. So what is the kingdom of God? Our culture has kind of merged two different bodies together into one thing, when that's not exactly the facts. So what is the kingdom of God? Joseph Smith taught, "There is a distinction between the church of God and the kingdom of God. It is an entire distinct and separate government. Church, kingdom of God. Two separate organizations, two separate governments. The church is a spiritual matter and a spiritual kingdom, but the kingdom which Daniel saw," so the church isn't what Daniel saw, he says, "was not a spiritual kingdom, but was designed to be got up for the safety and salvation of the saints by protecting them in their religious rites and worship." So the kingdom of God's job is to protect liberty, protect the rights of the people.
He then explained that the two were distinct as the church was not designed to govern men in civil matters, and the kingdom was not designed to affect our salvation hereafter. So we understand distinctively that these are separate things. And this understanding continued as the saints moved west. George Q. Cannon taught that we have been taught from the beginning this important principle. That the church of God is distinct from the kingdom of God. Distinct, separate. In the midst of all of us who understand this matter, there is a clear distinction between the church in its ecclesiastical capacity and that which may be termed the government of God in its political capacity. The kingdom of God is a political organization.
He also said the kingdom of God is to become a political power, known and recognized by the powers of the earth. So again, the other nations of the earth are still going to exist when the political kingdom of God is established. And you, my brethren, may have to be sent forth to represent that power as its accredited agents. So there's going to be people that are part of the political kingdom of God, the recognized political entity that will go forward as ambassadors to represent it, the other nations of the earth that still exist. This is not something that happens after all the destruction, after the return of the Savior. The nations still exist at this point. So first of all, the kingdom of God is not the church. And the kingdom of God is a political government.
So what's the governing body of the kingdom of God? It's called the Council of Fifty. It was established in the 1840s. There was a revelation constituting the kingdom of God in April 1844. It says, "Verily, thus saith the Lord, Ye," meaning the Council of Fifty, "are my constitution, and I am your God, and ye are my spokesmen. From henceforth, do as I shall command you, saith the Lord." That's the entire constitution of the kingdom of God. Compare that to like the UN Charter or even the U.S. Constitution. The more righteous something gets, right, the smaller that it gets, more succinct. So there are some really important resources because not only, you know, have we not--has this not culturally been understood, that these are separate organizations, but there's been very little for us to be able to understand the things that I've been covering so far. The kingdom of God, right, talked about what Daniel foresaw for our day. So it would be good. We want to go into what Daniel--the prophecy of Daniel. Remember Nebuchadnezzar had a dream, and nobody could interpret it. And so Daniel goes before him, and before being told what the dream was, and Daniel tells him what the dream he had was, and then interpreted it for him. And so we read in Daniel 2, "Thou sawest," so this is the vision that he saw, "that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and break them to pieces. And the stone was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the shaft of the summer-thrushing floors. And the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them. And the stone that smote the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth. Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it break in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold."
So this stone that was cut out of the mountain without hands. So often we hear that it was the stone that rolls down a hill, but the prophet Joseph debunks that idea. He says, "I will correct the idea in regard to the little stone rolling forward." It's not so. It is stationary like a grindstone, and like a grindstone, and then Joseph makes a circular motion like a grindstone does, and said that when the elders went abroad preaching the gospel, and people believed and obeyed the gospel, and became believers in the Book of Mormon, they were added to the little stone. "Thus they gathered around it so that it grew larger and larger, until it had already began to pinch the toes of the image, and it," meaning the stone, "would finally break the image in pieces, and be carried away like the shaft of the summer-thrashing floor, until the stone kept growing, until it filled the whole earth." So it's the kingdom of God, the political organization, that grows until it crushes the nations of the earth.
So we go back to the Council of Fifty Minutes, and their constitution brings out some-- this was a proposed constitution, not the revealed one, but they continue to teach these principles, because these are correct principles. This proposed constitution is not really like a delegation of authority, saying what government does and what it can't do, and how it should do it. It was more like a manifesto, it was a declaration, kind of the Declaration of Independence, and it laid out some key principles. They said that what they were doing was to hasten the accomplishment of his purposes, to fulfill the predictions of the prophets to establish a pure government. And they said that they were doing it as has been predicted by all the holy prophets since the world began to be brought to pass on the earth in the last days. So they weren't saying, "Oh, it's prophecy, there's nothing we can do about it." They said, "It's prophecy, let's get to work." And the prophet Joseph Smith said that, "If the saints possess the kingdom, I think they'll have to take it, and the sooner it is done, the more easily it is accomplished." So if the early saints had taken the kingdom of God as they were supposed to, that's when it would have been at its easiest, but it was difficult back then. And then each succeeding generation got more and more difficult.
So right now it's going to be easier for us to do this than it will be for our kids or our grandkids. So are we going to say, "Well, there's nothing I can do about it," and put it off for them to do even harder work? Or are we going to say, "You know what, we were born into a situation, and it's going to be tougher than it would have been in previous generations, but we've got to get to work, we've got to do this, we've got to take the kingdom. It is not going to be just dropped in our lap with us doing nothing. The kingdom of God is something that we are responsible to establish before his coming.
So the third thing that needs to happen is the destruction of secret combinations. So what are secret combinations? What is a secret combination? Another word for secret combination is conspiracy. So basically it's two or more people working in secret to do a bad thing. Surprise birthday party, not a conspiracy, right? So who doesn't believe that two or more people have gotten together to plan something bad in secret? That's absurd. Everybody believes that there's even laws against conspiracy. People are actually convicted of criminal conspiracy quite regularly. So there is a conspiracy that we face today. There's a global conspiracy that seeks a way to take the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries, as we learn about in the scriptures. In Ether, chapter 8, Moroni, not Catholic Moroni, but Moroni, the son of Mormon, is laying out the secret combination that led to the destruction of the Jaredites. And then he says this same conspiracy led to the destruction of the Nephites. And then you know what? You guys are reading this book because the people in my time aren't reading this book, so I'm talking to you guys in the last days that are reading this book, that believe this book is true. I'm going to tell you about the conspiracy in your day. He says, "Wherefore, O ye Gentiles, it is wisdom in God that these things should be shown unto you, that thereby ye may repent of your sins and suffer not that these murderous combinations shall get above you, which are built up to get power and gain. And the work, yea, even the work of destruction shall come upon you, yea, even the sword of the justice of the eternal God shall fall upon you to your overthrow and destruction, if, if this, then that, if ye shall suffer or allow these things to be."
So he's saying, I see your day, and you need to repent of your sins and not continue to allow this conspiracy to continue. If you allow this conspiracy to continue, you will be held personally responsible and will receive consequences for it. It is our job to not allow it to continue to get above us. "Wherefore, the Lord commanded you, when you shall see these things come among you, that ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation because of this seer combination which shall be among you." You're commanded to wake up because of this seer combination. "Wherefore, I Moroni am commanded to write these things." So let me go back to, let's continue. "So I'm commanded to write these things that evil may be done away and that the time may come that Satan may have no power upon the hearts of the children of men." So ignoring, putting your head in the sand, saying that it doesn't matter. He's saying that, no, I'm commanded by God to tell you that this is happening so that evil may be done away and that Satan will no longer have power. It is understanding these things that actually is able to remove evil from the earth and removes Satan's power over man. We have to repent of our sin, our specific sin, Moroni says, of allowing the conspiracy to get above us. In 2 Nephi, we learn about this, that it's going to be destroyed. "Wherefore, for this cause, that my covenants may be fulfilled, which I have made unto the children of men, that I will do unto them while they are in the flesh, I must needs destroy the secret works of darkness and of murders and of abominations." So he says that these have to be destroyed.
But some people say, "Well, the Lord is going to do that for us because the Lord is going to fight our battles for us," whatever that means, right? We're going to get into that actually in a second. But just in direct contradiction to what Moroni said, that we have a personal responsibility, a personal duty to repent of allowing it to be above us and that we were commanded to then work to not have them be above us anymore. Otherwise, we had a personal--now that we've woken up, now that we've read this, we have a personal duty to do something about it.
So how is the Lord going to do this, right? The Lord is going to fight our battles for us. An ambiguous thing that you can't say that you disagree with, but what does it mean? Brigham Young explained, "We all believe that the Lord will fight our battles." But how? Will he do it while we are unconcerned and make no effort, whatever, for our own safety when an enemy is upon us? We're just sitting here, enemy's about to attack us. "Lord, aren't you going to help me? You're going to fight my battles." He says, "If we make no efforts to guard our towns, our houses, our cities, our wives and children, will the Lord guard them for us? He will not. But if we pursue the opposite course and arrive to help him to accomplish his designs, then he will fight our battles." So if we give him something to bless, he's going to be the wind at our back to help us to be as effective as possible in our fight against the satanic conspiracy that we face today. So our job is to stop the conspiracy before Christ returns.
The next thing on this list of things is binding Satan. So many people that I've talked to say, "Well, that's going to happen after the Lord returns, and he's going to bind Satan." But we've been corrected in this as well. This is not somebody else's job. This is our job. Daniel H. Wells said, "We read that Satan shall be bound a thousand years." How is this to be accomplished? By our becoming so impregnated with the principles of the gospel, with the Holy Ghost, that an enemy will have no place in us or in our families and shedding forth that influence into our neighborhoods, bringing that from ourselves and then outward. The adversary is first to be driven from ourselves. We bind him ourself. Then from our families. Satan is bound and has no more impact on our families. And then from our neighbors, next from our territory, and eventually from the nations until he shall find no place upon the face of the earth. We are to bind Satan by our actions. We are not passively waiting for someone else to do this for us. Right? Then will he be bound? Yes, as far as this earth is concerned. So before the second coming, right, we've got to establish Zion. We've got to build the kingdom of God. We've got to destroy the Syrian combinations. We have to bind Satan.
So we're to get things done, right? Doctrine and Covenants says that we are to, "It is not meet that I should command in all things, for he that is compelled in all things the same is a slothful and not a wise servant, wherefore he receiveth no reward." We've been given with the principles have been laid, but we don't need to be commanded in all things. We have the principle laid out before us. We have the injunction of what we are to do. We are now called to the work. We are called to do the work of restoring the kingdom of God. We are called to do the work of restoring the kingdom of God. We are called to do the work of restoring the kingdom of God. We are called to do the work of restoring the kingdom of God. We are called to do the work of restoring the kingdom of God. We are called to do the work of restoring the kingdom of God. We are called to do the work of restoring the kingdom of God. We are called to do the work of restoring the kingdom of God. We are called to do the work of restoring the kingdom of God.
